Angry over the apparent inaction of the authorities to stop the menace of monkeys in Delhi, some shrewd residents of in the city, where monkeys killed an infant this week, have launched an online campaign to raise money and have hired monkey catcher. A majority of the 1,700 families from the panchayat in gram contributed money, generating the sum of Rs.50,000 over the course of four days. The funds were used to pay for a team of three monkey catchers who has captured 122 primates , and released them into the forest near Churmura about 25km from city limits.
One of the residents, Prasant Kumar, participant in the crowdfunding campaign said to Safe rescue team, “Residents were willing to pay because monkeys create chaos for all. The money was used to employ an entire team of three of Kosi Kalan, Delhi. They charge Rs 200 for each capture. So far, they’ve succeeded in capturing 122 animals, and released them into the forests. The animals were not injured in the capture.”
The monkey catcher in delhi use wooden cages that contain items such as grain and bananas to lure the monkeys.
“A Banana is stored close to the cage and grain is scattered throughout the. Once the monkey has entered the cage it takes time for it to gather the grain. Then, there is a monkey catcher near me is spotted nearby, and then sprints to close the cage’s door,” said a local resident who was able to witness the monkeys being taken.
Residents claimed that they had no other choice but to make things their own because officials were “slow to take action”. “The administrative department of the district is trying to get permission from the principal forest conservator (wildlife) to take on monkeys. We were forced to do something,” said a resident under the an anonymity basis.
In the city of Delhi, a monkey taken a baby boy who was 12 days old as his mother was nursing the baby in their home in the Kachhara Thok Colony last week. The animal had mangled the infant to death, then left it on the patio of a neighbor’s house.
The forest department’s district officer (Delhi), said that catching monkeys is a breach of Wildlife Act and he would investigate the issue.
Mittal stated Mittal said that Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has made the idea of sterilization of monkeys. The department is investigating the issue.
