Since 2007, Himachal pradesh state has seen the sterilization of as many as 1.4 million monkeys. Since 2007, Himachal’s monkey population has seen a slight drop, from 3.17 million in 2003-04 to 2.26 mil in 2013 and 2.07 lac in 2015. A second monkey census will be conducted in HP later this season said monkey catcher.
Foresters agree that while the method of keeping one monkey at a given time in sterilisation cages has proven to contain numbers, it is more of a hit-and-run strategy. They stated that sterilising more monkeys from the same troupe, and even more females, is a more scientific method.
